Midsummer Reflections

Good afternoon! As I sit here during my lunch break on this ever so hot July day, I realize that the year is over half way over. Heck, it’ll be Christmas before we know it!! As the dog days of summer wane on and the heat remains oppressive I start to dream of fall. Of flannels, fun decorations, and of course- pumpkin spice EVERYTHING! Fall also brings my 45th birthday and my next powerlifting meet (eek!!).

Looking back over the first half of 2017 I realize that, while it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows, it sure has been a life lesson.  I have lost some friends, yet have found a few new ones. I have watched someone very dear to me battle their demons as I fought desperately to love them without losing myself as collateral damage. I learned to create boundaries. I have embarked on a new journey of self discovery as I go through yoga teacher training. I have learned self discipline and strength as I continue my powerlifting journey.

I have found my inner voice. She is loud and fierce. For the first time in ever so long… I am comfortable in my own skin.

I exceeded my professional goals for the year by obtaining both my SPHR and SHRM-SPC. Even though my current job title is not specifically human resources, I am very excited about testing for and earning the highest credentials for an HR professional. I am continuing my growth and development so that one day I can utilize these skills in an HR consultant or management training goal.

I also changed my living situation. One of the best things that has happened so far this year is connecting with my roommate. It was a total God thing that brought the two of us together!! It is amazing having a roommate who becomes part of your family. Shella is fantastic and supportive. It is refreshing to come home at the end of the day to chat about our daily minutia. I love her and her family.

So what’s next? The second half of the year is going to pretty epic. I have a few things on my list that I am going to accomplish. I want to spend more time outdoors hiking and camping. In fact I am already scheduled for a ladies camping trip with Iron Braid Adventures on my birthday weekend. I am so excited!! Especially since several of my running friends will be on the trip with me.

As teacher training progresses I will be designing yoga sequences and teaching more classes. On Tuesday nights at Homegrown Yoga the teacher trainees are coming together to teach the Yoga Lab. I co-taught my first class this past Tuesday. It was both terrifying and wonderful. Even though I was nervous it was amazing. I loved every minute of it. I plan on practicing and videoing myself several times before August 1 when I go for round 2.

I’ve also been reflecting a lot about what I want to teach once I am certified. I would love, love, love to teach a yoga boot camp incorporating vinyasa flow with weights and body weight exercises. I also plan on pitching a yoga class to my male powerlifting counterparts at the gym. Hello increased squat depth! Which brings me to why I want to teach yoga in the first place. I want to share the benefits of yoga with everyone. Yoga has changed my life and improved my running and lifting so much!! One myth that many people have about yoga is that you have to be flexible and bendy to do it properly. That is so not true!

Midsummer is also the perfect time to reflect on goals. To measure where you’ve been and where you still want to go. If you don’t like where you are… make some changes. Be fierce. Be brave. Be humble. Be kind. But above all… be the you that you are meant to be. Make the rest of the year count!!
